48 hours was the series that launched roberts into the spotlight, and it remains his darkest, most intimate work. the acrobatic subjects in these photographs appear to be falling, or drowning within an infinite blackness. there is nothing to stop their fall; they have ceased struggling, as if peaceful in their submission. yet there is hope in the flexibility of their humanity, in their shared suffering.
